Ali Haider Gilani, son of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, who was kidnapped during a pre-election meeting from the suburbs of Multan in a commando-style action on May 8, is suspected to be in the captivity of a new TTP group Tora Shpa (Dark Night), reliable source in law enforcement confirmed TheNation on Thursday.
President Asif Zardari, immediately after the incident, conveyed his serious reservations to the relevant government agencies with a directive to get into action to recover kidnapped Gilani safely and bring the culprits to book.
So far law enforcement agencies have raided different parts of KPK in search of expected hideout of Tora Shpa on secret agencies' tip-off for early recovery of Ali Haider Gilani. Law enforcement agencies on Thursday reached the kidnappers and arrested one of the key men who facilitated the abductors. There was also a rumor immediately after the operation that wounded Haider Gilani was recovered in the said operation in suburbs of Nowshera but DPO of the area denied the news.
Former PM Gilani also denied the news reports regarding the recovery of his son Ali Haider. Talking to TheNation Gilani informed that there was no truth in the news item, adding, "I am hopeful for the safe recovery of my son."
According to sources, Tora Shpa, allegedly involved in abduction of younger Gilani, is a cluster of TTP. The group was formed for the specific purpose of raising money for TTP through criminal activities like kidnappings and extortion. TTP allowed it to establish a base in Wana (South Waziristan) and from there it conducts operations in KPK, Balochistan and Punjab. The sources added that Tora Shpa is backed by one of a neighbouring countries and this group has some hideouts in that country. The primary targets of this group are Pakistan Army, state assets, NATO and ISAF assets, US citizens and western government assets. The group's tactics typically include kidnapping for ransom, suicide attacks and other such acts. He added this group also carries out armed assaults referred in jihadi language as 'fidayee attacks' and has beheaded its captives in the past.
The kidnapped Gilani was contesting election from PP-200. He was kidnapped after he addressed a corner meeting in Farrukh Town in the limits of Seetal Marri Police Station. The attackers pushed him into a car without having registration number and fled the scene.
